On May 4th, 2025, I celebrated a special milestone: four years of living in France. Just a few weeks later, I turned 38. These two moments, coinciding in the same month, offered the perfect opportunity to reflect on how far I’ve come—personally, professionally, and emotionally—since arriving in this beautiful country.

When I first set foot in France as a student, life was uncertain and constantly shifting. Today, it feels remarkably different. Life here in northern France has become familiar, rooted, and—most importantly—stable. I now call it home, not just geographically, but emotionally too. I’ve been married for a year to my French husband, with whom I’ve shared a life for the past four years. Our home is no longer temporary; it’s where our shared dreams begin to grow.

The Last 12 Months: Achievements and Milestones

Career & Education

While my career hasn’t taken dramatic leaps this past year, I’ve remained committed to delivering consistent, solid performance in my current role based in Belgium. Sometimes, stability is its own success—especially when you’re building something long-term.

Personal Life

The highlight of my year was finally being able to visit my hometown, Davao City in the Philippines, after three long years. It was a deeply emotional reunion with my family and relatives, made possible through perseverance and hard work.

Along the way, I also managed to reconnect with friends in Singapore and visit my cousin in Bangkok—a whirlwind of joy and reconnection.

Good to be back home after 3 years

Another personal triumph was becoming debt-free from my Master’s studies in France. Clearing this major financial goal has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. In addition, I purchased a small parcel of land in the Philippines to benefit my parents—an act of love and gratitude I’m very proud of.

On the home front, my husband and I began our first project together: we bought a garage in Roubaix. We’re still exploring what it might become, but it feels great to begin a shared investment journey. I personally dream of buying our own house in the next 5-10 years.

Language Proficiency

My French has significantly improved, and I now speak more confidently in everyday situations. That said, I’ve noticed a plateau in my progress, which has pushed me to consider formal French lessons again to improve both my fluency and grammar.

Embracing Integration

Although I haven’t joined any local associations in the past year, I’ve taken a meaningful step by becoming a monthly donor to Croix Rouge France (Red Cross France). Volunteering for them is on my radar—I’d love to give back more to the community that now surrounds me.

Looking Ahead: Hopes and Aspirations

1. Driver’s License

This remains a top priority. The limitations of public transportation have become more frustrating, and I crave the freedom to travel when and where I want. Getting my license would be a transformative step forward.

2. Financial Security

My immediate financial goal is to establish a basic safety net (a.k.a. “the baby step”)—six months’ worth of liquid savings to cover essential living costs. It’s a modest but essential step toward long-term financial stability.

3. More Travel

I hope to explore at least 4 more new countries. Travel continues to inspire me and broaden my understanding of the world, and I’m excited to see what new places have in store.

4. Property Ownership

Having already purchased one piece of land in the Philippines, I’d like to acquire another in the future. It’s a way to stay connected to my roots and invest in something meaningful back home.

5. Lifelong Learning

As AI and technology reshape the global job market, I’m considering returning to school or enrolling in specialized courses. Staying relevant and adaptable in this fast-changing world is important to me.

6. Business Exploration

Lastly, I’ve begun researching how to start a business in France. While I haven’t made any firm plans yet, I want to understand the landscape and possibilities—just in case an opportunity arises that aligns with my passions and skills.

As I look back over the past four years, I feel a deep sense of pride and gratitude. Life in France hasn’t always been easy, but it has been profoundly enriching. From cultural integration to personal growth, the journey has shaped me in ways I never anticipated. I’m excited for what the next chapter brings—with goals to chase, roots to deepen, and dreams to build, right here in the heart of Europe.
